milkfrost's world

The brand new virtual world of Milkfrost - formally (milkfrost.multiply.com)

The reason why this blog is created is because Multiply.com is shutting down & all posts will be removed. Some posts here are back-dated from Aug 2004 - Aug 2012! I'm just doing a screen-shot & re-posting slowly cos it ain't easy to import every single photo. Therefore, only thumbnails are available for viewing, which also explains the white background & the little note at the end.

Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionery

Wendy was invited by The 3rd Generation Owner, Gavin for a hands-on Ang Ku Kueh Making session & she brought us along!

Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionery - a traditional shop located at block 84 Bedok North Street 4. It all started from its home business in 1968 before moving to its current location in 1987 when the business picked up.Other than selling their kuehs to the general public, Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionery also supplies them to hotels and catering companies.

To maintain the quality of their Soon Kueh, Peng Kueh & Koo Cai (Chives) Kueh, they are still hand-making it daily right from scratch!

As Chinese New Year is approaching, they also have some goodies for sale. Most of the goodies are made by relatives, also from local suppliers. Kueh Bangkit & Kueh Koya are few of those hand-made goodies available. These are handmade by a 80ish Old lady, and the mould itself is abt 90yrs old!

3rd Generation Owner, Gavin walking-tru the History of Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionery while his mum get ready some ingredients for us to hands-on making Ang Ku Kueh

Gavin explaining the history of Ang Ku Kueh to us, and demonstrating how they handmade the kueh

Us, getting ready to 开公 after Gavin's demo!

Ang Ku Kueh in the making! Saw my final result? Not bad leh.. heeheehee

The Girls at work!

So here's our final result & it's ready to be steamed!

Into the oven they goes!

Next, we were introduced Pulut Inti

Till date, Lek Lim are still insisted on using the banana leaves to wrap them for quality & taste control

Aunty showing us how to wrap them

Our works!

haha.. paparazzi at work

This huge machine you see here is for grating/cooking coconut & peanut paste.

The ladies here were hand-making Soon Kuehs when we reached, now they're hand-making Peng Kuehs. Just in case you're wondering why the Peng Kueh is colorless, it's because long time ago, people are poor to even afford the red coloring, so it remains colorless. Lek Lim is preserving the traditional colorless Peng Kueh, but they do have some doted with red color in the middle of the surface if you need them for offerings.

Our final product is ready!

It was quite an enjoyable little learning trip for us to get a chance of making Ang Ku Kueh. It makes me feel the hard-work of the ladies working behind the counter in the hot-stuffy environment over long hours. It's really not easy an easy job

Before we left, Gavin was generous to pack for us lots of handmade kuehs for us to bring home to share with our family!

Me, a sucker for Yam cake, Kueh Lapis & Wah-Go-Kueh, even bought more to bring home!

Hopefully Lek Lim's business will 发发发 so we can enjoy delicious homemade Nonya Kueh!

Lastly, Thanks Gavin for inviting Wendy!
