I was on half day AL on Monday cos I need to collect my prizes from OpenRice's Gourmet Challenge/ MakanHunt Contest. Together with Wendy & Sam, we went for late lunch at Tim Ho Wan 添好運 before heading to OpenRice office.
Wendy was there at about 1.15pm and was told that the waiting time is about 1.5 hours. She went ahead to join the queue as the queue is in the indoor area, with stools provided. Sam & myself joined her about 15 mins later & we waited for about 55 mins.
We were given the order chit while waiting in the queue
We were shown to a table at a corner and it was pretty warm.
Table setting and sauces available
First to be served - Baked Bun with BBQ Pork 酥皮焗叉烧包 $4.50/3pc; one of the Big 4 Heavenly King
It was pipping hot, soft & fluffy. But the filling was a little too wet & sweet
Glutinous Rice Dumpling 古法糯米鸡 $5 - Rice is a little too wet & the sauce is a little sweet for my liking.
Pan Fried Carrot Cake 香煎萝卜糕 $4.50/3pc; another one of the Big 4 Heavenly King - Carrot cake does not have the fragrant of Chinese sausage and can only find few thin slices of carrot bites.
Spring Roll with Egg White 赛螃蟹春卷 $4.20/3pc - The Egg white blends well with the Crab fillings; crispy skin yet not oily. A must try!
Prawn Dumpling 晶莹鲜虾饺 $5.50/4pc
Pork Dumpling with Shrimp 鲜虾烧卖皇 $5/4pc
The above two dishes taste normal.Nothing to rave about.
Steamed Egg Cake 香滑马来糕 $3.80; another Big 4 Heavenly King - This is probably the best among the 4 although it doesn't looks outstanding. Soft & fluffy, with hint of brown sugar fragrant.
Pork Rib with Black Bean Sauce 豉汁蒸排骨 $4.20 - Sift & tender, but can't really taste the black bean sauce & only 1 black bean is found!
Beancurd Skin Roll with Shrimp 鲜虾腐皮卷 $5.50/3pc - One of the best I've had so far. Fresh & crunchy prawn in crispy beancurd skin; not too oily.
Vermicelli Roll with Pork Liver 黄沙猪润肠 $5.50/3pc - I was so looking forward to this but it was disappointing. The pork liver is overcooked & chewy. The vermicelli roll is thicker than those you find in local market, thus not as nice
Vermicelli Roll with Shrimp 韭王鲜虾肠 $5.50/3pc - Again, the vermicelli roll is thicker than those you find in local market, thus not as nice, but the prawn here is fresh
Here's a table full of food for 3 ladies! A little ambitious, but we managed to finish all!
Last but not least, Tonc Medlar & Osmanthus Cake 杞子桂花糕 $3.50/3pc - I like this cos of the generous amount of wolf-berries & osmanthus flower used & it's was sweet, but it was served to early. By the time we dig in, it wasn't very cold. Also, they did not change/ give a new set of utensils we have to eat this with our oily utensils, making the dessert a little oily.
When we left at about 3pm, the crowd has slightly die down. If you're planning to head down to Tim Ho Wan, best time to go is on a weekday between 2pm-4pm
3 of us, braved an hour of queue at Tim Ho Wan and all I can say is... ...
"Tim Ho Wan, been there & done that. It's definitely not worth the 2 hours wait"
